Japanese technology giant Fujitsu has announced it will be releasing new PCs in the near future equipped with Blu-Ray drives. Fujitsu is the first major company to do so far, with other PC makers opting to back the HD-DVD format, which is on a head to head collision against Sony's Blu-Ray format.

The first of Fujitsu's PC equipped Blu-Ray PCs are expected to hit the market sometime in June or July 2006, although they will only be released in Japan and not in the wider western market. The next-generation Fujitsu PC is also said to come standard with a whopping 37 inch LCD screen. Fujitsu has indicated the PC will retail for around 600,000 yen, equivalent to around $5,000 US. Fujitsu also intends to launch a range of notebooks with Blu-Ray drive, as well as notebooks with the competing HD-DVD drive format. Clearly, Fujitsu wants to keep a foot in both camps, as the ultimate winner between the two formats is a long way away from being decided.

Toshiba has also announced a new range of products which will come factory-equipped with HD-DVD drives, these are expected to hit the market in May 2006, although as usual, will only initially come out in the Japanese market first. Considering the delays of the PS3, it is vital for Sony to have as many 3rd party and OEM manafacturers to support its Blu-Ray format. With two distinct camps forming - and with many companies stradling both - Blu-Ray technology is far from becoming a universal format and Sony will be keen to make sure it doesn't just become a properitary "Playstation only" technology.
