In more dissapointing news, Sony has announced Australia will not see the release of the Playstation 3 until around March, 2007.... groan....
Whereas the PS3 will see a November release in Japan and the US, us poor Aussies are going to have to wait (as usual), and ponder why we always get stuff so late (perhaps because we live in the arse-end of the world geographically?).
"Sony says the move is due to a delay in the mass production schedule of
the blue laser diode - a key component of the PS3's Blu-ray disc drive."
In other words, Sony's got production issues. Which is no big surprise - the PS3 has been plagued from these "supply and production" issues from day one. That said, March is a long time after November... and it means that while the rest of the world will at least be able to get some hands on experience with the console, us Australians will be left twiddling our thumbs - perhaps on our XBOX 360s ?
Speaking of the competition, it looks like the PS3 is now got an even larger battle on its hands for market dominance - certainly in Australia. With the XBOX 360 out for ages allready, and Nintendo planning to release the Wii here before Christmas, Sony is going to miss one of the prime "retail spending" periods here in Oz. Now hardcore Playstation fans may be able to hold out, but when dad or mum are looking to buy little Tommy a present a christmas, what are they going to do? Pick up a much cheaper console (the XBOX or the Wii) or wait another three months for an unreleased, more expensive, console?
For Sony, it's not such a huge blow: Australia is a much smaller market, and won't have an influence on the global market battle (much). For us tho, it's another case of Aussie console gamers getting the rough end of the stick.
