In what is sure to rock the old proverbial boat a bit between XBOX and Playstation fanboys, a Ubisoft producer has let slip that the much anticipated (and once to be a PS3 "exclusive" - but now coming to the XBOX 360 as well) Assassin's Creed may perform "better" with AI on an XBOX 360, rather than a PS3.
"Assassin's Creed producer Jade Raymond has let slip what she
must have assumed was a minor detail, suggesting the Xbox 360 version
of Ubisoft's upcoming release will boast superior crowd AI when
compared to the PlayStation 3 version. She points to 360's more-capable
threading technology as the reason for this slight improvement. Raymond
also noted that the Xbox team is working on some special achievements
for Assassin's Creed, but she did not comment on the state of PS3 entitlements."
Now while this comment has roused the usual nerd in-fighting all over the internet, let's take a few steps back here and assess the situation from a (somewhat) logical perspective.
a) The XBOX 360 and PS3 are very different beasts from an architectual perspective. The XBOX 360 has been out for ages now, while the PS3 has still yet to be released. You don't need to be an IT guru to know that it always takes developers time to get their heads around a new console platform. Just look at the initial releases for the PS and PS2, some games were absolute rubbish (technically), but they sure got a lot better.
b) The XBOX and PS3 both have their strengths and weaknesses. Comparing them at this stage is like comparing apples and oranges. Or perhaps avacadoes. Who knows. The PS3 is the "new guy" and it will take some time for developers to get their head around what is also a very unique (and perhaps confusing) architecture.
c) It's the usual geek gaming obsession over ifs and what ifs. The game isn't even out yet dammit!
d) Jade Raymond is just a chick, what does she really know anyways? Ho ho. I kid, I kid... She's very talented and intelligent and the more women in the games industry the better.
